I was recently attacked, ya’ll!

Not by a bear in the woods…or  the neighbor’s German Shepard. No, I was attacked by a stack of falling shoeboxes as I was trying to plan my outfit for the next day. That’s when I realized it was time to really focus on closet organization. I poured over magazines and websites to find the best way to accomplish this rather daunting task. Then I boiled all of that down to things that Kiki would actually do (I’m self aware, if nothing else). Check out these 6 simple organization tips that helped me declutter my bedroom closet and shave time off my morning routine

6 Simple Closet Organization Tips

Closet Organization Tip #1 – Purge

Getting rid of the clutter is the first step to an organized closet. This means it’s time to part ways with anything that you haven’t worn in a year. Host a swap party with family and friends or donate any clothes that are in good condition.

Closet Organization Tip #2 – Don’t be Imelda Marcos

Remember Imelda Marcos, the First Lady of the Philippeans, that famously owned 3,000 pairs of shoes? Yeah, don’t be her. Unless you have deep deep passion for shoes, donate, consign, or give away any you no longer wear. Ladies, trust me. I know this one is a tough one. I have a fabulous collection of 4+ inch stilettos that I haven’t worn since my pre-knee surgery, party girl 20s.  Parting with them is going to be such sorrow.

Closet Organization Tip #3 – Know When To Fold ‘Em

Fold clothing that’s less likely to wrinkle – for example, spring knits, sweaters, T-shirts, jeans, khakis and athletic wear. Adding shelf dividers will keep your stacks neat and save you tons of space.

Closet Organization Tip #4 – File Under ‘T’

Instead of cramming your T-shirts in drawers, create a T-shirt file system. Simply fold your T-shirts as you normally would, fold in half once more and file them lengthwise. The T file system allows you to see all of your t-shirts without having to dig through a pile.

Closet Organization Tip #5 – Hang ‘Em High

Divide hanging space in half by adding another rod if you can. You can hang twice the amount of shorter items like skirts and blouses. Up the style factor by ditching those hangers from the dry cleaners  – NO WIRE HANGERS EV-ER! Hangers like these pretty velvet ones from Bed, Bath and Beyond give your closet a polished look and they save space.

Closet Organization Tip #6 – Group Like with Like

Develop a grouping system that makes sense to you. I organize my clothes by type – pants, jeans, blouses – then by color. I’ve found it allows me to quickly see my all of my options when I’m putting together an outfit.
