So we’re about to chunk the “deuces” to 2014 and say “hel-lo” to 2015. And you know how it goes. We all want to live a healthier, happier, less stressful life than we did last year. So on January 1st we make those damned resolutions only to abandon them January 31st. Anyone besides me guilty of this? Well this year WILL be different, my friend! Not only am I making the “exercise more, eat less” resolution, I am also making a few resolutions for my home. I think these small changes will help me enjoy my living space even more. Doesn’t that sound fun? Don’t you want to make a few New Year’s resolutions for your home?  Sure you do! Let’s get it started!

 Kiki’s New Year’s Resolutions

My name is Kiki Hood. And I solemnly resolve to do the following things so that I may enjoy my home a little more, be more inclined to entertain guests. And most importantly,  I would prefer NOT to run around like a mad woman looking for stuff when I’m getting ready in the morning.

“I resolve to buy some art…and actually hang it on the wall”

I have serious commitment issues… when it comes to artwork. Although I love it, I tend shy away from buying art because I second guess my decision. “Yes, I like it. But, is this piece RIGHT for this room?”  “What if I drill all of these holes in the wall, hang this picture.. and I then I don’t like it?” These are the questions I ask myself. Then I end up walking away with nothing which equals bland, boring walls and a room with no personality.

“I resolve to turn my bedroom into luxurious retreat fit for a queen”

Bedroom-Decor

It’s no secret – I have an eclectic, quirky style.  I don’t purchase “sets.” I collect things that reflect my personality and interests. This approach makes for a slooow decorating process. So, my bedroom has good bones (i.e. nice sturdy furniture) But, it could use a dash of “Kiki” and I think i’ve had this comforter since I moved into my first “grown up”  place – 10 years ago! So I vow to add a few cozy touches like a reading nook and soft, luxurious bedding. I’m convinced that this will help me sleep a lot better and not wake a lot less cranky.

I’m one of those weird people that actually like to clean. It’s kind of a stress reliever. But sometimes, life and a busy schedule gets in the way. And cleaning and organizing tasks go neglected for days and weeks. Then I feel overwhelmed so I procrastinate a little more. Sound familiar?  This year, I vow to clean out all of my closets and drawers (even the kitchen “junk drawer”) and develop a weekly clean schedule. I’ll accomplish a little bit at a time and never have to spend an entire weekend cleaning.

Inject colors and patterns into your living space.

It’s a known fact that color can have a effect on your mood. So, it’s only fitting that you add dashes of color to your living space. Most of us want to add a little color and visual interest to our rooms. We’re just afraid to or just not sure how. However, when it comes to adding color,  a few small changes can have a huge impact. In my upcoming posts, I’ll help you cure your color-phobia – the simple, affordable way.

Embrace your style and live with what you love.

If I gave you a credit card and sent you on a $10,000 decorating shopping spree (think TV show What Not To Wear ) would you know where to start? Or would you be totally stumped? Your first step is defining your style. To discover your decorating style, take a style quiz, look at photos in decorating magazines or even your clothing wardrobe. Once you’ve defined your style, only purchase decor that you truly love. Your home should be a reflection of your personality and lifestyle.

Now, I wouldn’t dare encourage you to make New Year’s resolutions for your home and leave you hanging. What kind of friend would I be? In my upcoming posts, I will be giving you little pearls of wisdom and advice to help you keep your resolutions. I will also share my progress on keeping mine. Good luck to all of us!

In the meantime, share this post with your family and friends who may need a little motivation.  Let’s kick off 2015 with a bang!

  1. My husband read something about getting your house in top shape in 30 days today. I think I need to make that my new year’s home resolution and then give myself a treat if I can do it.

  2. Love all these ideas! I really love the art one – I’ve started hanging up some of my own photography I have for sale to fill my blank walls (at least until that piece sells haha) 🙂

  3. My master bedroom is on my short list for revamping in 2015. Seems I’m so busy with the rest of the house that my bedroom kind of gets left out. Great ideas!

  4. Beautiful post! I am guilty of buying artwork but not framing them and having them sit in my closet! I love my bedroom furniture and linens but hardly make my bed up the way it looked in the store! And I definitely plan to eat less and exercise more!

  5. I love your resolutions and those images!! I have absolute no decorating style. It’s horrible. Maybe I need to set a goal to get some style?
